Sunday October 11th at 10.30 at St John the Baptist, Cherington

A message from Sarah Scotter:

‘Living in our villages means that harvest is a natural part of the rhythm of our lives.  

Wonderful productive farmland supporting both arable and livestock farming, so this is our opportunity to celebrate where we live and our local farmers.  

As usual, the Flower Team will be decorating the church for Harvest Festival and would welcome donations of produce to add to the displays.  

Store cupboard items would also be appreciated.  

Everything donated will be taken to our local food bank afterwards.

Please leave any items at the back of the church by Friday 9 October.

Harvest Activities for Children at The Hall Saturday 10th October from10.30 – 12.00

A message from Sarah Scotter:

‘Kim Petty, as part of our SW7 Benefice Outreach, is holding a morning of harvest activities in The Gallery at The Hall on Saturday 10 October from 10.30am-12pm.  

This is open to all children throughout the Benefice. Children must be accompanied by their care giver.  

All materials for the activities will be provided.

I will be joining Kim for the morning.  I really hope children from our two villages will come along as it will be an opportunity to create something original, and maybe bring it along to the church for our Harvest Festival Service at 10.30am the following day.’

Repairs and Restoration at St John the Baptist, Cherington

Our lovely church, St John the Baptist in Cherington needs some TLC…

See report below on the ‘Quinquennial’ from Roger Maycock of the PCC:

‘Certain repair and restoration work needs to take place on the structure of our village church.  As custodians of this ancient building, the PCC have had a thorough survey (commonly known as a Quinquennial) undertaken by an approved professional.

The result of which is that we will need to commence a programme of works which is estimated could cost in the region of £60,000 (at current rates).  This can be scheduled over a staged period to fit with the degree of urgency of the various facets of work.  The biggest single item is the restoration of the Nave window which is estimated to cost £12,000.

Our aim is that the church will remain open for the majority of the time, and certainly for the services that normally take place.’

Church Bell Book Quest and a Special Quarter Peal on 12th May

The Book Quest

A message from Sarah Scotter in an quest to unearth any of these rare little treasures:

‘These rare little books are very useful to anyone learning to ring church bells.  They were first published in 1982 by a local ringer, Mrs Pam Copson.  They measure 10cm x 15cm, so could be squirrelled away at the back of a drawer, as this was when I found it.  If anyone reading this comes across one in their home and it is no longer needed, please let me know, and I will come and collect it’.

Cherington Bells for International Nurses Day on 12th May

A group of ringers from Coventry Ladies Guild will ring a quarter peal at St. John the baptist Cherington, onTuesday 12 May – the date of Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

The group will include both current and retired nurses.

Ringing will begin at 1:00pm and last about 45 minutes.

Easter Sunday 5 April: Donations for Lilies

‘It has become traditional for us to include lilies as part of our church decorations at St John’s.  It can be a lovely way to remember and celebrate someone we love.

Cherington Nativity needs a saviour

A plea from Sarah Scotter for a willing successor to take on the organisation of the much cherished Cherington Nativity

The Time Has Come …..

The time has come the Walrus said

To speak of many things,

Of Mary and Joseph and Christmas Eve

And Angels with beautiful wings.

I am speaking, if you haven’t already guessed, about the Cherington Nativity – beloved by so many.

And the Walrus – that’s me – needs a successor to step up and take it on.

I know our villages have many capable and willing parents, because I’ve met you during my years of rounding up our Nativity cast.  I also appreciate how busy family life is BUT village events benefit from new ideas/energy and this is one of them.  I have costumes and scripts – all that is needed.

Here’s hoping this notice works.

A Quarter Peal in Memory of Paul Marriott: Friday March 6th

A celebration of the Life of Paul Marriott

A Quarter Peal of bells will be rung on Friday 6 March at Cherington Church, starting at 12pm, in memory and celebration of the life of Paul Marriott.

It will be followed by his funeral service at 1pm, and the wake will be held at The George in Brailes.

Paul’s family extend a warm invitation to both.
