Touring nationwide, “Mettle” is a powerful exploration of the true story of Gordon Collett, a 19 year old from Sheffield, who volunteers for the Royal Navy and serves on HMS Vanessa. It is a celebration of a man and his wartime service on one of the most infamous Atlantic convoys of World War Two.
Written and performed by Actor/Writer – and Gordon’s son – Nicholas Collett. This is a deeply personal and moving true story, based on stories revealed only during his parents’ golden wedding anniversary, and on Gordon’s service records. From 1930’s Sheffield, the outbreak of war, the U-Boat attacks and treacherous weather, to the relative calm of West Africa and even a Glenn Miller concert, Nicholas skillfully charts his father’s progress as a young man in one of the most dangerous theatres of war, contrasting it with their personal relationship. The result is a warm, humorous, dramatic and moving play.
“Mettle” is for anyone who enjoys theatre of any kind! Also, anyone with an interest in military history or World War 2 in particular, or anyone who enjoys a relatable thread of family-ties, or anyone who likes their heart warmed alongside some drama, some humour, and some story-telling!
We have the added bonus of a Q & A session with Nicholas after the show.
