The Latest News on Progress From Martin Craddock

‘A more upbeat update this time…

I have now submitted several Planning Applications and, by early April, hope to have permission to tidy up the garden and carry on pointing the outside of the pub.

Meanwhile, we are continuing with the interior decoration and, as soon as the garden is ‘rejuvenated’, we are hoping to have the pub open again. We are aiming for mid-May which is ambitious, but achievable, if all goes well.

Phase 1 will then be complete with Phase 2 following at the end of the year as that requires a more complicated planning application which I hope to submit shortly.

And there’s more good news….

The lease will be taken on by Jack McEntee who owns The Happy Wolf Pub Company and who already has two pubs – ‘The Peacock’ at Oxhill and ‘The Yew Tree’ at Avon Dassett. Both pubs are thriving and Jack’s really excited about the potential for his third pub – ‘The Cherington’. And yes, you spotted it, we’ve changed the name (but don’t worry, it’ll grow on you).

So, we’re now all working hard to try and have everything finished by mid-May and, from that point, Jack will be totally and independently responsible for running the business and I will simply be the owner of the building. By then, and in other words, “I’m out”.

There will be a new General Manager and Chef, as well as three or four other permanent staff so I hope you’ll join me in wishing the new team at ‘The Cherington’ every success.

And last but not least, Jack is already working on the new website, Facebook and Instagram pages etc and all future updates will be posted there. See below.

Artistic Talk at The Hall March 21st Reminder

There will be a talk by the artist Alison Hulme on her life working with textiles at The Hall on Thursday 21st March, followed by a Full Day Screen Printing Workshop on 22nd.

Full Day Screen Printing Workshop – 1 place left

£65 per person includes all tuition, screens, inks etc; please bring fabric for your projects (Alison will have some available to purchase as well).

Combined ticket for the Workshop and ‘My Life in Stitches’  £66. 

 This is being run at cost. The number of places on both events are limited to ensure the best experience for participants and will be on a ‘first come’ basis.

‘Aspirational Plan’ Progress and Thanks to the Volunteers

Yesterday (Feb 10th), on a bright and for once dry (!) Saturday morning, a group of 20 or so volunteers from the village started work on the first phase of the ‘Aspirational Plan’ for the Hall / Playing field.

See below for report on progress of the plan from The Hall chairman Jim Walton, and a few pics of the day.

Hall/Playing Field Aspirational Plan – Progress

‘The Aspirational Plan having recently been approved, a Working Group of some 20 volunteers met to start work on the first phase of the work on a sunny Saturday morning. Anyone passing the Playing Field recently will notice a big change with the roadside hedge having been coppiced and the gaps replanted.  Repairs have been made to the Playground equipment.  Thanks to all who participated, a great deal was achieved.  There is going to have to be a big bonfire when conditions allow.

The Plan is ambitious and whilst a lot can be achieved by volunteers, substantial funds will be required, particularly so that the additional car parking area can be constructed.  Thanks for funding on the first phase which has been supported with a substantial contribution from Cotswold Decorative Ironworks for the expensive fencing and G.H. Walton & Son for the hedge plants and guards.  If you are able to help fund this project, please make contact with our treasurer Piers Marshall at info@thehallevents.org.uk. 

Your help is essential.

We will be organising further working parties so look out for information on this here on the village website.’

Meeting to Discuss Village Sewage Issues 11am Feb 23rd at The Hall

There will be a meeting organised by Parish Councillor Barbara Babbage at 11am on Friday February 23rd at The Hall to discuss the frequent flooding and leaking of untreated waste and sewage in the village.

It will be attended by local MP Rt. Hon Nadhim Zahawi, representatives from Severn Trent Water and our Parish Councillors.

All villagers from Cherington and Stourton are welcome. See notice below from Barbara for information and how to attend.

Village Meeting

To Discuss the Issues of Sewage and Flooding of Untreated Wastewater

11am FRIDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2024

THE HALL STOURTON

The subject of the meeting is the frequent flooding and leaking of untreated waste and sewage through the manhole covers around the lower junction of Church Lane and Main Street, and the discharge of untreated sewage via road drains into the River Stour.

To address the hazard to public health and the need for short, medium, and long term plans to rectify the situation, Councillor Sarah Whalley-Hoggins has arranged for the meeting to be attended by the Rt. Hon. Nadhim Zahawi MP, as well as Parish Councillors and representatives of Severn Trent Water.

Residents of Cherington and Stourton are welcome to attend, especially if they are:

  • Residents of Main Street affected in any way by the flooding, sewage, or water quality
  • Residents who use the highway near Church Lane or Main Street by vehicle, on foot, or by bicycle, as well as those with children, pets who use the highway
  • Residents impacted by flooding of untreated water on the highway

But also any resident who is concerned about the impact of the above on the village.

The level of resident experience and concern is important

Residents who attend this meeting will be able to hear Councillors speak on their behalf, which will encourage service providers to resolve the inadequacies in the infrastructure and improve health standards.
