The Church

The local church, St. John the Baptist, is a Grade 1 listed building, largely of 13th century origin, with chancel, nave, north aisle and west tower. It is notable for its fine 14th century tomb of a franklin, and for the decorative and heraldic glass assembled by an 18th Century Rector. The main Victorian restoration in 1876-7 was carried out under the superintendence of a local builder, James Pickering of Cherington.

A public appeal to restore the bells raised £40,000 back in 2006 and the original set of 5 was augmented to 6. An article relating to this work can be seen here.

It forms part of a group of seven village churches in South Warwickshire, known as The South Warwickshire Seven. It covers the parishes of Barcheston with Willington, Barton-on-the-Heath, Burmington, Cherington and Stourton, Long Compton, Whichford and Ascott and Wolford and is part of the Church of England, within the Diocese of Coventry.

Service information relating to these churches can be found here.

The local rector is Ben Dyson, who was installed in 2022.
